Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the incident was apprehended not long after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene displayed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was under an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had happened on a story above the access point and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
